The Jiangsu Provincial Department of Industry and Information Technology recently unveiled the second batch of provincial industrial heritage sites, with Mudanli Cultural and Creative Park in Changzhou making the prestigious list. This recognition highlights Changzhou’s ongoing commitment to preserving and revitalizing its industrial heritage, establishing yet another exemplary model of such efforts.

      What is industrial heritage?

Industrial heritage refers to sites developed during the long-term evolution of industrialization that hold significant historical, scientific, social, and artistic value. Mudanli Park underwent a rigorous on-site review by an expert panel from the provincial authority, earning high praise for its preservation of core artifacts, its role in industrial history, and its innovative "industry + culture and tourism" model.

      A legacy of textile excellence

Situated on the former site of Black Peony Group, Mudanli Cultural and Creative Park stands as a living testament to Changzhou’s textile industry. It embodies the dreams and achievements of generations of textile workers, serving not only as the birthplace of Black Peony’s corporate culture but also as a "living heritage" of Changzhou’s industrial past.

The story of Black Peony Group

Founded in 1940 as Wujiaji Fabric Factory, Black Peony Group played a pivotal role in the development of Changzhou’s modern textile industry. The company pioneered the production of the nation’s first dye-sizing machine, a breakthrough that led to the saying, "Start the machine, and wealth flows in." It was also among the first manufacturers in China to produce denim fabric and venture into the global market.

      Transformation into a cultural hub

In 2015, Black Peony Group transformed its historic site into Mudanli Cultural and Creative Park, with a focus on denim as its central theme. The park has since become a key venue for showcasing the history and culture of Changzhou’s textile industry. Beyond its industrial heritage, the park has evolved into a vibrant hub for food, performances, and art exhibitions, integrating seamlessly into the city’s "Tourism+" initiatives. It now serves as a new "gateway" and "icon" for industrial tourism along the Grand Canal in Changzhou.

      Changzhou’s industrial heritage leadership

With the addition of Mudanli Cultural and Creative Park, Changzhou now boasts four national-level industrial heritage sites and three provincial-level ones, securing its position as a leader in both categories across Jiangsu Province.
