A recent announcement by China’s State Administration for Market Regulation, Ministry of Ecology and Environment, National Development and Reform Commission, and Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has revealed the national pilot projects for product carbon footprint labeling certification. Among the selected initiatives, Changzhou’s lithium-ion battery project stands out as the only one in Jiangsu Province, marking a significant achievement for the city.

The term "carbon footprint" refers to the total greenhouse gas emissions produced throughout a product or service's lifecycle. Carbon footprint labeling certification ensures that a product’s direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions, along with related data, comply with recognized standards or technical specifications. By quantifying the environmental impact, this certification allows businesses and consumers to make more sustainable decisions. The carbon footprint label, which appears on the product or its packaging, provides a transparent, measurable way of showcasing a product’s ecological impact and promotes efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

So far, five key players in Changzhou's EV battery industry, including CALB, SAIC-CATL, and others, have received Jiangsu's first batch of product carbon footprint labeling certification. The certified products include battery cathode materials, modules, cells, aluminum casings, and power battery systems. "The carbon footprint label will become a company’s identity, continually driving technological innovation and industrial upgrades," said Liu Lin, director of quality at SAIC-CATL.

Changzhou has long championed the optimization of energy structures and enhanced energy efficiency, actively encouraging companies to undergo carbon footprint verification. With this new national pilot project, the city is set to further accelerate its commitment to green and low-carbon transformation by expanding the carbon footprint certification process to include more local industries.
